Forest Friends Urban Farm – Natural Fertilizer

Fresh Organic Produce such as vegetables, greens, herbs and fruit grown in an environmental friendly way at the aquaponics farm in Vredendal.

For the Kuys-couple in Vredenburg the dream of an urban aquaponics farm became true. In 2016 they bought a plot of 1 hectare in the Western-Cape town of Vredenburg with the idea of developing an aquaponics farm in the town where their market is local, therefore all around them. It produces healthy fresh products, is organic and also make use of natural fertilization.

Fresh organic produce

So now they produce a variety of leaf vegetables which they package in colourful mixes. They mix green and red oak leaf lettuce, cos and butter lettuce, beetroot leaves, fennel, dill, wild as well as sweet rocket, basil, spinach, Chinese cabbage and also pak choi.

These products get harvested in the mornings and by lunchtime they can be on your plate. They provide these fresh products to the local market, various restaurants, private people as well as an online products shop. This venture has developed into a sustainable supply of environmental friendly food.

What is aquaponics?

Aquaponics is the integration of Hydroponics (growing plants in water without soil) and Aquaculture (rearing of aquatic animals for food) all living together in a symbiotic relationship. The fish provide food for the plants and in return cleans the water for the fish.

How does this happen?

The fish produce waste which change in nitrates and ammonia. These are not good for the fish if the build up too much. There are microbes living on the grow-bed that change the ammonia to a form of nitrogen which the plants can suck up to grow.  The plants suck up these nutrients therefore they purify the water.  As a result this again good for the fish.

The most commonly used fish in aquaponics is tilapia. Advantages of this type of farming are, among others, no use of pesticides of artificial nutrient; no weeds, pests and soil-borne insects; as well as use of water is cut dramatically.
