Vredendal is situated in the Green Fringe of the Olifantsrivier valley which borders on the southern tip of Namaqualand, and forms part of the West Coast. The town was originally known as Bakkeley Plaats. Apparently due to an altercation between the Dutch and the Khoi in 1668. Once peace had been declared, the name was changed to Vreedensdaal – valley of peace. It is the commercial and agricultural hub of Matzikama. Home to the largest wine Cellar in South Africa, as well as a number of boutique wineries and a dried fruit depot. With a variety of accommodation, restaurants and tourist attractions.
